Join us as we welcome Dr. Jennifer Ison and Dr. Adam M. Baker on The Science of Urban Pollinator Ecology:
The 400+ native species of bees in Ohio are critical to the health of our natural areas and gardens but many are declining or have already gone extinct. Fortunately, there are many actions we can in our gardens and community to help! Dr. Ison will discuss the importance of native bees and the threats they face, the impact of their decline on the environment and what we can do to help protect and restore them. Often gardens and conservation plantings are designed with an approach based solely on aesthetics. However, if we apply what we know about the ecology of pollinators and beneficial insect in garden design, we can significantly benefit these insects. Dr. Baker will provide an example of how a monarch butterfly conservation garden resulted in 2-4 times more colonization than traditional gardening strategies.
